Lostify 0.6.1

I just posted version 0.6.1 to the Downloads page. It’s just a bug-fix release; no new features. It addresses the following issues:

  • The dock icon is now always reset to its normal state when the application quits
  • Lostify no longer complains when processing files that already contain embedded lyrics
  • The timeout value for making backup copies was increased from 1 minute to 5 minutes
  • If you change the file kind between Movie, TV Show and/or Music Video while running from within iTunes, Lostify now instructs iTunes to re-categorize the file appropriately

Thanks to everyone for reporting these!

    Hi Lowell.

I’m considering a switch from Windows to Mac. It’s great that so much iTunes related software such as yours is available on the Mac platform. I can see from various sources that Lostify is awesome for tagging VIDEO content. However, I’m wondering if I would be able to use Lostify to add an “Explicit Content” tag to my AUDIO files that I ripped from CD. All my files are encoded in .m4a format. If I do use Lostify for audio and change ONLY the Content Advisory tag, will all of Lostify’s other tag fields for such things as Video Kind, Network, Show, MPAA Rating, Episode, etc. screw up or add unnecessary tags to my audio files?

  2. Lowell Says:

Yes, as long as the files are mp4-based (including m4a, m4b or m4p), you can use Lostify to add or modify the tags/metadata. Only tags where you actually set or change the default values are added to the file. Leave it blank, and it won’t hurt anything. (In fact, even if you fill out stuff, it usually won’t hurt anything. iTunes will probably just ignore stuff that doesn’t make sense.)

Just wanted to tell you what a great app. I have been using it since early beta with only one or two problems (that were of my own making). I’ve tried A LOT of other taggers and this one blows them all out of the water. It’s not as “integrated” as some might like, but the recent option as a script in iTunes is definitely a step in the right direction. Good job and keep it up. I look forward to purchasing a final copy once it comes out of beta.

Program keeps getting better! But! (always one of those)…I’m a Star Trek fan, own all the DVDs to 3 show (TNG, Voyager & OS), have ripped them all (painful), and they all go into iTunes well. But the appleTV only shows me ‘Star Trek TNG’ episodes, not ‘…Voyager’, ‘….. OS’ etc. I have ‘Star Trek TNG’ in the show field as I do with the others, but they refuse to show up, even though iTunes has no issue. Incidentally, Front Row also had no problem with them on a Mac mini. Ideas???
Also, batch mode? Is it coming? Making a change to a big series like this requires me to click ‘apply’ for the most minor of changes to like 300 shows.

Just wanted to first off say thanks for this app, I’ve been using since version .0.5, and it’s saved me alot of work and headaches, you’ve done a killer job.
Now, I put in my vote for the Embedding artwork as a higher priority feature. After I lostify my vids, I bring them into iTunes, then I have to add the artwork, which takes as long as Lostifying the file in the first place did.
Keep up the good work man!

I love the app, but the new iPhone export in Quicktime does not seem to be supported yet. I have absolutely no idea why this particular export creates files that are so different that Lostify will not be able to load them! I just wanted to drop you a line about that in case you didn’t know yet. Again, I love the app. I hope you keep up the good work!

Is there any equivalent to this app that talks to iTunes rather than changing the MP4 files directly?

I personally use a little script to save .avi’s as medialinks or reference QT movies that obviously don’t have MP4 atoms. This way I can add movies to QT and don’t have to transcode. However tagging them one by one is a nightmare. I can’t use lostify obviously since iTunes stores the metadata internally, and not in the actual movie files (which are either QT reference files or XML links anyways so won’t work with AtomicParsley).

So is there any similar solution or script that does tagging internal to iTunes?

    Thanks! And great app!

  8. sam Says:

just wondering if you can add long description with lostify and can you add artwork?

  9. Lowell Says:

sam– well, the “long description” is not a separate tag in the MP4 file. MP4 files just have a “description” atom, which Lostify can set, but which iTunes fails to read completely due to its own internal limitations/design. The “long description” is a field within iTunes that is only accessible via AppleScript. However, in response to your question: yes, Lostify can set the long description, provided the file you’re working on is linked to iTunes (i.e. either you invoked Lostify from iTunes via the Script menu, or you’ve instructed Lostify to add the file to iTunes).

As far as artwork goes, no, Lostify does not support artwork at this time, but it will be coming in a future release.

  10. Lowell Says:

Clint — I’ll be updating Lostify soon to include support for the new Apple TV-branded MP4 files.

  11. Hans Says:

First of all thanks for this great little app. My problem is that the nice little i-button does not show up in iTunes. Maybe it is because I am using the german localisation of Mac OS. Anyone with the same experience?

  12. Gordon Werner Says:

Any chance that we’ll be able to modify the tags on really large files? My HD files are too big … and I get that “cute” error message when I try to open them.

  13. Gordon Werner Says:

also … where is this applescript? I downloaded 0.6.1 and do not see it

  14. Lowell Says:

Gordon — I’m not sure when AtomicParsley will be able to support really large files, but when it does, Lostify will inherit that ability.

As far as AppleScript — which script are you referring to? If you mean the one that lets you invoke Lostify directly from within iTunes, Lostify installs it automatically whenever you check the “Add Lostify to iTunes Script menu” checkbox in Lostify’s Options drawer.

  15. Matt Says:

Are there any equivalient programs on Windows or any way that you know of to add explicit tags?

  16. thecommodore6 Says:

    Hi!
I have been using your program for some months now to organize my video library in iTunes. Today I read here that the Atomic Parsley program can easily make any AAC file into a ringtone for iPhone by changing one metadata entry, which is what, as I take it, Lostify is built to do. Is there any chance you would consider building this functionality into a future release of Lostify?
I’m just curious. I don’t own an iPhone (yet), but I know how useful and easy your program is and I felt like this would make a suitable addition.
    Thank you for your time,
    Rob

  17. Lowell Says:

Hey Rob… thanks for referring me to that blog!! I don’t have an iPhone either, but I’ve kind of been wondering when we would find out the “stik” value for ringtones (so I could add ringtones to Lostify). That’s exactly what I was looking for.

I’ll roll ringtone support into the next version (0.7), which I hope to get out this week or next week.
